Decking
What we do
A deck is only as good as the frame under it. We build a level, solid frame, raised off the ground and with room for air to move underneath, so the timber stays dry and the boards stay flat.
Composite boards do not rot or splinter and need very little looking after. Timber is cheaper at the start and looks natural, but needs treating every year or two. We can help you choose.
- Taking up and removing an old deck
- Building a level, treated timber frame
- Laying composite or timber boards
- Steps, edging and fascia boards
- Repairing frames and replacing boards
- Cleaning, oiling and staining timber decks
- Taking all old timber and waste away

Good to know
Before we start
Under permitted development, a deck or raised platform more than 30 centimetres above the ground usually needs planning permission. Most garden decks are built lower than that.
Timber decks last longer if they are cleaned and treated every year or two. Composite decks need an occasional wash but no oiling or staining.
Decks can become slippery in shade and in winter. Regular cleaning helps, and grooved or textured boards give more grip.
A deck should not block air bricks in the house wall, and it should sit below the damp proof course.
What clients say
We hired AK Gardening Specialist to install decking and a BBQ shed in the back of our terraced house. We are repeat customers and would highly recommend their services. They are reactive, professional and competitively priced.

Questions
About decking
Composite or timber?
Composite costs more at the start but does not rot, splinter or need oiling. Timber looks natural and costs less, but needs cleaning and treating every year or two.
Do I need planning permission for a deck?
Usually not, if the deck is no more than 30 centimetres above the ground. Higher decks, and homes that are listed or in a conservation area, may need permission.
Can you save my old deck?
Often, yes. If the frame is sound, we can replace damaged boards, then clean and re-oil the deck. If the frame has rotted, it is better to rebuild.
Can you take the old deck away?
Yes. We take up the old deck and take all the timber and waste away.
Can you add planters or steps?
Yes. We can build steps down to the lawn and planters to go with the deck.
