What we do
A well-cut hedge gives a garden its shape. We cut back overgrown hedges, keep formal hedges neat and trim the tops of tall hedges safely. We also shape pleached trees and topiary.
For trees, we reduce and reshape crowns, cut back branches from roofs and boundaries, and take down trees that need to come out. When the work is done, we clear up and take every branch and cutting away.

Before we start
Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is an offence to damage or destroy the nest of a wild bird while it is being built or used. The main nesting season runs from March to August, so we check every hedge before we cut. If we find a nest, we leave that part until the birds have gone.
Most formal hedges look best with a cut in late spring or early summer and another in late summer or early autumn, once the birds have finished nesting.
Some trees are protected by a Tree Preservation Order. Trees in a conservation area are also protected, and you normally have to give the council six weeks' notice before work. We check before we start. Your council can tell you whether a tree is protected.
You can usually cut back branches from a neighbour's tree or hedge to your boundary line, but the branches and any fruit still belong to your neighbour. It helps to talk to them first.
Many trees are best pruned in late autumn or winter, when they are dormant and the leaves are off.

When is the best time to cut a hedge?

Do you cut hedges in the nesting season?
We check every hedge for active nests before we cut. If we find one, we leave that part until the birds have gone. Disturbing an active nest is against the law.
Can you work on a protected tree?
Before any tree work we check whether the tree has a Tree Preservation Order or stands in a conservation area. If council consent or notice is needed, we do not start until it is in place.
Can you cut back my neighbour's tree?
You can usually cut branches back to your boundary. We do the work neatly on your side. It is a good idea to tell your neighbour before we start.
Do you take the branches away?
Yes. We clear all cuttings and branches, sweep the drive and paths, and take the waste away with us.
Can you remove the stump as well?
Yes. Tell us when you ask for a quote, as it changes the work and the price.
