Lawns and turfing
What we do
A new lawn is only as good as the ground underneath it. Before we lay turf, we clear the old grass and weeds, dig or rotavate the soil, level it, firm it and rake it to a fine finish. That way the lawn settles level and roots well.
If your lawn is worn, patchy or full of moss, we can often bring it back without starting again. Where a real lawn will not work, for example in deep shade or a very small space, we can lay artificial grass on a proper base.
- Clearing old grass, weeds and rubble
- Rotavating, levelling and preparing the soil
- Laying new turf and edging the lawn
- Repairing bare and worn patches
- Scarifying, aerating and feeding
- Laying artificial grass on a prepared base
- Taking all soil, turf and waste away

Good to know
Before we start
Autumn and spring are the best times to lay new turf. The soil is warm and moist, so the roots take quickly. Turf can be laid in summer, but it needs a lot of watering.
New turf should be watered well for the first two to three weeks, and you should keep off it until it has rooted. A gentle tug on a corner tells you: if it lifts, it needs more time.
London clay holds water in winter and cracks in dry weather. On clay, good preparation matters. Breaking up the soil and adding topsoil helps the lawn drain and root.
Scarifying and aerating are best done in early autumn, when the grass is still growing and can recover.
Artificial grass needs a firm, free-draining base so it does not ripple or hold puddles. It still needs an occasional brush and leaf clear.

Lawns
Had a major building work done. The old garden was trashed by builders who replaced the compacted old soil with a new lot. This had soon become weedy. AK Gardening Specialist cleared the weeds, dug up the slabs of an old shade, and rotavated the soil. Levelled the top soil and prepared to fine tilth. Topped with compost and laid new turf. All work was done to perfection and efficiently. Karlo and his assistant were clearly experienced. Reasonable price and responsive to queries. Gave good advice. I am very happy with their work, which they followed from my rough sketch. Pleasure to deal with such professionals who were polite and cleared after work. Would certainly recommend them and use them in future.

Questions
About lawns and turfing
When is the best time to lay a new lawn?
Autumn and spring. The ground is warm and damp, so the turf roots quickly. We can lay turf in summer, but it will need watering every day in dry spells.
How soon can I walk on new turf?
Keep off it for about two to three weeks, until the roots have taken hold. We will tell you when it is ready for the first cut.
Can you fix my patchy lawn without replacing it?
Often, yes. Scarifying, aerating, feeding and repairing the worst patches can bring a tired lawn back. If the ground is very poor or uneven, new turf may be the better choice. We will tell you honestly.
My garden was damaged by builders. Can you sort it out?
Yes. We clear the rubble and weeds, break up compacted soil, bring in topsoil if needed, level it and lay new turf.
Do you lay artificial grass?
Yes. We dig out the old surface, lay a firm, free-draining base and fit the grass. It suits shady corners and small gardens where real grass struggles.
