How much does a new fence cost in London in 2026?

The short answer. In London a new closeboard timber fence with concrete posts typically costs around £110 to £160 per metre fitted in 2026, and a composite fence around £120 to £200 per metre. A typical 10 metre back garden run lands somewhere between £1,100 and £2,000. Removing the old fence, access, slopes and clay soil all change the final figure, so a site visit gives the real price.

What is the price of a new fence per metre in London?

These are typical West London market figures for supply and fitting, not a price list. They assume a standard 1.8 metre high fence on reasonably level ground with normal access.

  • Closeboard (featheredge) timber with concrete posts and gravel boards: around £110 to £160 per metre.
  • Timber panels on timber posts: around £80 to £120 per metre. Cheaper to buy, but posts usually rot first.
  • Composite boards with aluminium or concrete posts: around £120 to £200 per metre. No painting and no rot.
  • Slatted or hit and miss timber screens: around £140 to £220 per metre, depending on the timber.
  • Side gate: typically £350 to £900 fitted, more for made to measure aluminium.

What makes a fence cost more or less?

Two fences of the same length can be priced very differently. The main reasons are below.

  • Taking down the old fence and removing old concrete from post holes. This alone can add £15 to £30 a metre.
  • Access. In terraced houses in Northolt or Southall everything often has to go through the house.
  • Ground conditions. London clay holds water and moves, so posts need deeper footings and good drainage.
  • Slopes and steps, which mean stepping or cutting panels.
  • Height. Above 2 metres in a back garden usually needs planning permission.

Is timber or composite better value?

Timber is cheaper on day one. Composite costs more to fit but needs no staining and does not rot, so over 15 to 20 years the gap narrows. If the fence faces strong wind, the posts matter more than the boards: concrete or metal posts outlast timber ones on clay soil. Our timber vs composite guide covers this in more detail.

How long does it take to fit a new fence?

A typical back garden of 10 to 15 metres usually takes one to two days for a small team, including taking the old fence down. Concrete footings need time to set before heavy panels go in, which is why some jobs run over two visits.

How do I get an accurate price?

Measure roughly, take a few photos, and ask for a written quote after a site visit. A good fencer will tell you what is included: removal, waste, post type, gravel boards and any gate. A.K. Gardening Specialist has fitted fences across West London since 2006, and the visit and quote are free.

Questions people ask

How much does a 10 metre fence cost in London?

For closeboard timber with concrete posts, a 10 metre run typically costs around £1,100 to £1,600 fitted in 2026. Composite is usually £1,200 to £2,000. Removing the old fence and difficult access can add to this.

Who pays for a new fence between neighbours?

The owner of the boundary pays, and ownership is set by the title deeds, not by which side the fence faces. Where ownership is unclear, neighbours often agree to split the cost. Put any agreement in writing.

Do I need planning permission for a new fence?

Usually not. In most back gardens a fence up to 2 metres high is permitted development, or up to 1 metre next to a road. Listed buildings, conservation areas and Article 4 areas can have stricter rules.

What is the cheapest fence that will last?

Featheredge timber boards on concrete posts with a concrete gravel board are usually the best value for money in London. The posts and base do not rot, and single boards can be replaced if damaged.

When is the best time to replace a fence?

Any time the ground is not frozen. Autumn and winter are popular after storm damage. Booking in late winter usually means a shorter wait than in spring.
